I’d never lived away from home, or without family or friends close by.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI studied abroad in Ireland and was homesick even before I left. My mom lent me her necklace, saying ‘she’d always be with me.’ I wore it whenever I was homesick, hugged it, and carried it everywhere. Everything around me was new and exciting and I wanted to share it with my best friend. Money was tight and travel seemed impossible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e A way I stayed connected was with a necklace my mom lent me, a stone heart. Everywhere I went I took a photo with it, as if my mom was there with me when I traveled. If I was homesick, I’d wear it and I wore it often. It felt like she was with me in more than just a metaphorical way. When I came home, I made a photo album of all the places I went and ‘took’ her with me.
