During college I studied abroad in Ireland, and was homesick even before I left. It was the first time I'd ever been far from home & without people I knew.
My mom lent me her heart necklace, saying ‘she’d always be with me.’ I wore it whenever I was homesick, hugged it, and carried it everywhere.
But everything around me was also new and exciting and I wanted to share it with my best friend.
A way I stayed connected was with the necklace.
Everywhere I went I took a photo with it, as if my mom was there with me when I traveled.
It felt like she was with me in more than just a metaphorical way. When I came home, I made a photo album of all the places I went and ‘took’ her with me.
Sharing those photos & stories made connections to memories I felt lonely in.
